“When terrible, abusive parents come crawling back, what do their grown children owe them?”
Over at Slate, we have an oldie but a goodie from Emily Yoffe (aka “Ask Prudence”). The story, titled The Debt, covers the experiences of different adult children of abusive parents, and how the idea of “owing” their parents played out in their adult lives.
In my case, I’ve recently gone full no contact with my mother (almost four months now!), but the feelings of guilt and obligation still eat away at me. Reading other peoples’ stories helps me, and I hope it helps you, too!
Click over to Slate and check it out. When you’re done, there’s a pretty great discussion about it on Reddit.
